Distillate, Live Resin and Live Rosin
Three carts can look identical on the shelf and still be made three completely different ways. Here's what distillate, live resin and live rosin actually mean, and why the price tag moves between them.

Before the carts make sense
Six words on every vape listing
You'll see these across the vape section of the menu. Once they click, the rest of this page does too.
- Distillate
- Cannabis oil refined over and over until it's mostly THC. Clean and potent, but the refining strips out the plant's own flavor.
- Terpenes
- The aromatic compounds that give a strain its smell and taste, the citrus, pine or gas you notice when you open a jar.
- Fresh frozen
- Cannabis frozen right after harvest instead of being dried and cured, so more of those terpenes survive.
- Live resin
- Oil extracted from fresh-frozen cannabis using a solvent that's purged out afterward.
- Live rosin
- Oil made from fresh-frozen cannabis with no solvents at all, only ice water, heat and pressure.
- Solventless
- Made without chemical solvents. It's the word you'll see on rosin products.

Same plant, three ways to pull the oil
What's actually inside the cart
Distillate is refined until it's mostly THC, then terpenes are added back for flavor. Live resin keeps the plant's own terpenes by starting from fresh-frozen flower and using a solvent to pull the oil. Live rosin starts fresh-frozen too, but skips solvents entirely: the resin is washed off in ice water and pressed with heat.
Every one of them sold at a licensed Michigan shop has been lab tested. The label tells you the THC and who tested it.
Same plant. Three ways to get the oil out.
Why the process changes the flavor
The more a process protects the plant's own terpenes, the more the cart tastes like the strain on the label. Distillate trades that for purity and a lower price. Live resin and live rosin keep more of it, and rosin does it without solvents.
None of this is a ranking. Plenty of regulars buy distillate on purpose, for the price and the flavored options.
Side by side
Three oils, one shelf, very different carts
A quick side-by-side of how each one is made and what that usually means for flavor and price.
| Oil | How it's made | Flavor and price |
|---|---|---|
| Distillate | Refined to mostly THC, terpenes added back | Whatever's added back, often fruit or candy. The value option |
| Live resin | Fresh-frozen flower, solvent extracted, solvent purged | Strong and close to the strain. Priced in the middle |
| Live rosin | Fresh-frozen flower, ice-water hash, heat and pressure | Natural, full strain flavor. The premium option |

The two ends of the shelf
Value or premium
Distillate is where the fruit and candy flavors live, because the flavor is added in. Live rosin tastes like the strain it came from, because nothing was taken out and nothing was added.
If you like a specific strain's smell in the jar, rosin is the closest a cart gets to it. If you want a sweet flavor and a friendlier price, start with distillate.
The one people mix up
Resin and rosin are not the same thing
Both start frozen
Resin and rosin both begin as fresh-frozen flower, which is where the "live" in the name comes from.
Resin uses a solvent
The oil is pulled out with a solvent that's purged afterward. Rich flavor, usually a little easier on the wallet.
Rosin is pressed
Ice water, heat and pressure only. Solventless, more work to make, and priced that way.

Both premium, made differently
Live resin or live rosin
Both give you bold flavor and plenty of the plant's own terpenes. The real difference is how the oil was pulled out, and that shows up in the price more than anywhere else.
If solventless matters to you, look for "rosin" on the label. If you want strain flavor for a bit less, live resin is the sweet spot.
If you're standing at the counter
Picking a cart, three steps
No wrong answer here, just a simple way to narrow it down.
Decide on flavor
Sweet and fruity points to distillate. Tastes-like-the-strain points to live resin or live rosin.
Check the label
THC, the strain, the lab and the batch are all printed on the package. Track 01 walks through it.
Start low
A new cart is a new product. Take one pull, wait a few minutes, and see how it sits before the next.
Distillate, resin or rosin, it's all the same plant. Pick the flavor you like and the price that fits your night.Skunkies · Kalamazoo, MI

Quick answers
Vape oil questions
Is distillate lower quality?
No. It's highly refined and lab tested like everything else on the shelf. It just gets its flavor from terpenes added back instead of the plant's own, which is why it usually costs less.
What does "live" mean on a cart?
It means the oil came from cannabis that was frozen right after harvest instead of dried and cured, which keeps more of the plant's aroma and flavor.
Is live rosin stronger than live resin?
Not by definition. Potency depends on the specific product, and the THC number on the label is the one to go by. The main differences are how it's made and the price.
Do these carts fit my battery?
Most carts on the menu use the standard 510 thread, but check the product listing or ask staff before you buy.
How much do they cost?
We don't list prices here. Check the live Weedmaps menu and the deals page for what's on the shelf today.
